SANTIAGO A MIL THEATRE FESTIVAL
Please notice that during all January will be taking place, in Santiago de Chile, an International Theatre Festival called “Santiago a Mil”, where you could see very important plays from Chile, Europe, Asia and South America.
International Theatre Festival “Santiago A mil”: a 15 year-old commitment to Chile’s cultural life Envisioning and planning the “Santiago a Mil” International Theatre Festival has been a true journey over the years; a constant search for new themes, events and artists; for unique actors and performances. Santiago a Mil began as collaboration between cultural organizations and teams of independent artists. Together they have provided all of us with an opportunity to explore new languages in performing arts. As organizers of this Festival we feel that people, as a right, should have access to quality national and international cultural events. And we share the conviction that all forms of art can help us to become better human beings; widen and deepen our sensibilities, and let our imaginations fly. We are now celebrating our 15th anniversary. Over the years we have gained a vast amount of experience and in 2007, when we attracted record crowds, we exceeded not only our own expectations but also those of the artists’ community and of the country as a whole. Looking toward the future, we plan to continue offering high quality dramatic arts that we expect will continue to fill public spaces, crowd the streets and pack our theatres. We are also focusing on Chile’s upcoming 2010 bicentennial celebration. We want to participate in a collective examination of the country we inherited and helped shape. And we hope to help answer the question of where, as a society, we go from here. The first Festival Teatro a Mil was held in January 1994 in a place called Estación Mapocho, a former Santiago railroad station. Its program included just five plays performed by three local companies –Teatro La Memoria, Teatro del Silencio, and La Troppa– which were warmly received by the surprisingly large number of people who filled the old Estación. Our Festival has been gaining momentum ever since and, beginning in 2001 when it was moved from Etación Mapocho, it became a true international event. We have been able to attract highly regarded foreign theatre companies that during the month of January perform side-by-side with Chilean drama groups in Santiago’s theatres, cultural centers, plazas and streets. Over the years, a diverse group of enthusiastic collaborators have agreed to support our initiative. Private companies, independent production agencies and several universities have backed our venture and continue to do so. The Festival has also expanded beyond the boundaries of Santiago and into Chile’s various regions. We are working hard to make sure that trend continues. The Festival owes its success to the dedication and commitment of hundreds of people. We count on strong support by non-profit organizations as well as the general public, which is gaining an increasing appreciation of what it means to have access to such quality art and entertainment.
