Juan Carlos Retamal completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Concepción, graduating with a Bachelor's Degree in Physics in 1985. Shortly after in 1986, he joined the Master's (Physics) at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile. In 1988 he started his doctoral studies in Physics at the same University, graduating in 1991. He developed his thesis on the problem of quantum noise reduction, under the supervision of Dr. Miguel Orszag Posa. In 1992, he joined the academic staff of the Physics Department at the University of Tarapacá, where he remained working until 1993. In 1994 he joined the Physics Department of the University of Santiago de Chile, where he has been pursuing his academic career, becoming the titular professor. His research work has mainly focused on the study of quantum coherence in elementary quantum systems, in the context of Quantum Optics, Quantum Computation and Information, Quantum Simulations, Quantum Matter. To date, he has directed seven PhD theses and one Master's thesis in Physics. He has conducted various administrative duties in the Department and the Faculty Councils. He has directed doctoral programs in Physics and Physical Engineering on several occasions, and has been the Deputy Director of the Department of Physics Sub-director of teaching. He has been the Director of Postgraduate Studies and the Academic Vice-Rector of the University of Santiago de Chile. He has been a member of the Board of Directors of the Chilean Physical Society, holding the position of the Secretary on one occasion and twice as the President. He represented Chile in the Latin American Center of Physics (CLAF) based in Rio de Janeiro. Among many activities, he has been actively popularizing Physics participating in conferences and taking initiatives to support students and teachers, such as PROFISICA.
